Full Version: So, I bought a sailing yacht
Point of Existence Forum > Off Topic > The Barracks

After a friend of mine bought a sail boat, instead of a regular apartment, to live in during his studying, we got kinda hooked on the thought of sailing around the world in said boat. However, having sailed said boat, four people, for two weeks this summer, we found out it was just to small (31', one-cabin 1981-model). We then decided to get together and buy a bigger vessel. So, now, today, we signed the contract for buying a '98 Jeanneau Sun Fast 37' 3-cabin sailing boat!

Over the last years we have reconcidered the route, and found out we won't be sailing around the world, but rather spend a year sailing around the Atlantic (down through Europe, then Africa, cross over to Brazil, up through the Caribbean, Florida, US East Coast, Greenland, Iceland, UK, and back to Norway!).

We are three friends who have actually bought the boat, and we will probably be four or five on the actual trip.

So, here are some pictures of the beauty!

So, the plan is to sail out in July next year, about a month after I return from my second tour to Afghanistan.. So I'll quit my job, my buddies will put their school-going on hold, and we'll be gone for 12+ months!
That is the plan, at least! clap.gif

Dude, this is my dream. Do keep us informed.

Oh man that sounds like the coolest idea. Remember to bring a lot of books or something though. Might get a little boring at times tongue.gif
Denver3000
definately bringing LOTS of books!
We'll have a web site/blog/journal/picture thingy for the trip up one time or another!=)
We've been in contact with several other Norwegians who have been on the same kind of trips, and have gotten lots of help and tips from them.. been talking alot to these guys, and were actually going to buy their boat, but my buddy had to sell his old boat, and we used it as part of the payment for the new boat, as the owner wanted a smaller vessel.. Although pricier, and somewhat smaller and less equipped than S/Y Uterus, I think it is a better boat overall for our purpose hammer.gif
Anyone here been on a similar voyage?

I went on a ferry once. Oh and I used to own a canoe!
betterdeadthanred
Out of curiosity, how much did she cost?
Denver3000
She was priced at 690 000,- NOK, but we settled at 650 000.. equivalent, I wolud estimate, to about 110 - 120 000,- US Dollars, at todays rate.. boats are expensive here, like everything else in this country, due to ridiculous taxes.. Then again; the boat market in Norway has supposedly collapsed in the past year, and supposedly there are now 65 sellers to every one buyer.. So, all things concidered, we got a lot of boat for the buck (he paid 850 000,- NOK for it two years ago, and has spent quite a lot on it (new instruments, GPS, fridge, etc))!

Btw; I'm open to suggestions for her/it's name! exclamation.gif

Very cool man.

Grats.

As for a name,

How about "metall, og glassfiberforsterket snekkja"?
Or "Ikke bekymre deg om Storbritannia, vi skal til Brasil"
Or "Bedre deretter pirat"
Or "Redde Eiríkr"
Denver3000
Hahahaa, beautiful!
Especially your first one, "Metall og Glassfiberforsterket SNEKKJA" with a J, which resembles my home-town dialect way of pronouncing words!:D
You know Norwegian, or did you get help from your bearded coworker?
senor freebie
Well no actually, I was tempted to ask my bearded coworker to help me but vikings only help this envolves embarking on a snekka or similar vessel armed with an assortment of axes and swords.

I actually used google translation which seems to have been upgraded ... although I got a couple of the words from wikipedia such as "snekkja" and "Eiríkr" because I thought that there might be more traditional / older spellings for viking terms that would be recognisable to modern scandanavians.
Denver3000
Ok, here are the direct translations:
"Metal and fiberglass-reinforced small boat"
"Don't worry about Great Britain, we are going to Brazil"
"Better, then pirate"
"Eirikr the afraid" or "Save Eirikr" as REDDE means more than one word..

Don't know if these were the sentences you meant, some of them don't make sense, but I like them=)

That looks like a very nice yacht Denver thumbsup.gif

If you want to sail in the Swedish archipelago - give me a call.

Det ser flott ut Denver.
(Looks great)

If it was up to me, we'd take the extra couple of weeks it would take to swing by Sweden.. Needs to stock up on SNUS!! And it's way too expensive here in Norway you know!
Got to be an easier way of doing it though.. gonna check in to buying the stuff tax free or something, or pay someone to buy a ton, and meet us in England..tongue.gif
Imagine I would run out quite fast, so I suppose it's headed back to cigarettes..=(

"Don't worry about Great Britain, we are going to Brazil" (2)
"Better, then pirate" (3)

(1) Small boat or Snekkja was taken from the Wikipedia article where they said it was the word for the smallest type of Viking Longship.

(2) The Britain reference was a reference to the viking raids there.

(3) Self explanatory, vikings > pirates

(4) Save Erik (the Red) was meant to be the meaning of this. eg. a viking rescue party off to save the missing viking colonialists in the Western oceans.

I envy you. That is all.

Nice boat my friend. I hope it all pans out close to plan.

For one, if you or any of the other sail-mates are going out with annother, then this can spell trouble - no one wants to go sailing for a week (let alone one year) with an 'ex' who becomes a sex-buddy, antogonist, source for arguments and demoralising the crew.

As happened to two of my boat mates when we were sailing the Carrib, for the Millenium on a 50ft Sailboat. I will get the details of what it was soon - I knew the one we had was a production prototype; that was sailed from France to St. Thomas for us to collect. We were upgraded to it (from a 10 bearthed 45 footer), it had 2 heads and a unique for the time, 2 bearthed hard covered combined/roofed rear deck/dininig/communal & cockpit/galley area. It was a graet trip for us, I went SCUBA-ing by Angel Cay & in the BVI's, and went to Foxy's beach bar on Jost Van Dyke Island, where I had some of the best food even, and a fresh-from-the-twin tuned V8 drug-boat Cuban 'Grande Bolivar' Cigar for $20.
Except to recently split up passengers/'crew' couldn't afford to waste they're deposites & tickets/bearths, so we had to suffer the emotional black clouds from them - and the occasional flare ups, when 'her' wanted to use 'him' as a f*ck-buddy, but not want to otherwise pay attention to him.

Bon Voyage!

What an adventure. I get sea sick on a pedal boat so it doesn't appeal to me - but that sort of trip stays with you forever.

Will you have internets?

Ever been to Belfast - birthplace of Titanic? (She was ok when she left here...)

as for a name... how about...

The "Point of Existence" ?

What kind of people are these?! That's just plain heartless, and wrong... and stuff.

I mean, come on!
Denver3000
Sounds like you had a nice trip razor, and sounds like a wicked boat!! See if you can get some pics up here! If you have some!
As for relationships, only one of us has had a steady relationship for a year (she's planning on meeting us about half way, around the Caribbean, and spending a month or so with us on the boat). I myself am currently in the process of creating a relationship, so we'll see how that works out... scared.gif
When it comes to f*ck-buddies, it is almost always doomed to not work out.. sadly..wink.gif And it must've been hell to endure for you all, if they were doomed to spend more time that clos together!

Have got a lot of names now, but can't decide on one, sadly..
When it comes to internet, NO.. we contemplated having some sort of satellite uplink, but I think that would have been waaay pricey! So we'll just have to post experiences from our adventures whenever we're ashore...
Decided the route more in detail now, and we're going north of Scotland, down through the Irish Sea, so we might just stop by Belfast=)
Going to spend a couple of days at the Isle of Man to supply, and visit family who live there.. Haven't been there for like eight years or something..!
Jonathan_Archer_nx01
I'd rather have Bugatti Veyron.
senor freebie
I'm not sure they float :|
Jonathan_Archer_nx01
But it can fly.
Denver3000
They also cost 20 times more than the boat!
And you can't live in one!
Look at the boats you could buy for the same price as a Veyron, and tell me again you would rather have the car!! ohmy.gif

* - Denotes Plural; The Minas Gerais sold for HALF the price of the Bugatti Veyron.

I didn't know that boats were so cheap. But I'd still rahter have a supercar because there's no sea around.

Veyron is overrated. Too heavy and too small.

How is it overrated? It's underpriced, a lot.
Lord of all Hedgehogs
Denver, you're welcome to visit me and my friend Joe in Durban. He has all the herbs and boat utilities you could possibly want. Just give us a call and join the fekkin party winkgrin.gif
senor freebie
Its only under-priced because it was developed entirely for the sake of research. Its practically still a prototype.

And yeah, its over-rated ... put a cheaper, race built car around the same track and you'll see its inadequacies. Hell ... buy a $100,000 Cessna and see who comes out best @ top speed tongue.gif
