I like that Krazny is preparing for zombie invasion, while i want to drink unlimited much alcohol and try to "sleep" with so many girls as possible before tomorrow @ 0900 GMT, or whenever they start it. They are creating a black hole, not a teleport to Hell, like Doom:3
BTW: Do i have to do my homework for tomorrow if we are going to be sucked into a black hole?

I trust the scientists. Do I think we really need to be doing this kind of experimenting? No. But I don't think the world will explode. I'll be playing Spore.

I'm staying up all night to build a time capsule that can survive the trip through a black hole, load it with some boxes of my favorite beer, sit tight, and pray it works. Hopefully some nice aliens will pick me up when i reappear 10.000.000 lightyears away from our destroyed solarsystem.

That thing will probably knock even Kraz to the grass
Krazny
Sep 11 2008, 04:19 PM
Not really.
The thing about a caliber like that is that the recoil impulse is more of a push than a punch. It'll hurt from the prone position, but from the offhand position, its not too bad cause you can roll back with it.
Plus, guns in calibers like that are usually 16 lbs or more, so that does tend to help with the recoil. . . .

Not sure why people thought whizzing round a proton to test to see if it works was ever going to end the earth.

Sep 12 2008, 12:33 AM
They collide the protons at extremely high speeds. Some people thought/think that doing this will create micro black holes which could swallow the earth.

Actually thats one of the stated purposes of the test. They intend to create mini-black holes but the difference between those and say one created naturally from the expansion of a sun is that the amount of energy required to sustain a black hole long enough for it to suck anything in is not there.
Krazny
Sep 12 2008, 12:53 PM
Yep.
Any mini black holes created will instantly collapse due to insufficient energy and mass to sustain themselves.
The LHC is also designed to look for the Higgs Boson, and larger scale antimatter production. The latter is why many people were upset.
Matter + anti-matter = complete conversion of both to pure energy. . . . . .

It's the basis of star treks warp drive, the amount of energy it release is simply amazing. E=Mc2 if you take just 1 kg of both matter and anti matter your talking an energy release of 300 GJ

There is no future in anti-matter as an energy source.
The scientists at CERN stated that if they used all the anti-matter they had ever created, it would make enough energy to make a 40W lightbulb glow for a few minutes. And it takes enourmous amounts of energy just to create a few atoms.

Correction under current scientific knowledge they see no future in anti matter as an energy source. If someone was to find a way of producing it easily then I see no reason why it couldn't be used.

They haven't started colliding them yet. But apparently speeding up a proton to the speed of light was enough to make people commit suicide.

The total number of antimatter molecules that have been produced can be counted on one hand.
The main reason they don't make it is because they really don't have an effective way to store or contain it. . . . .
