Meh, Gustav wimped out already? Coming from somebody who has gone through several Cat 3s and greater, they just blow leaves off trees. They aren't anything to worry about unless you live in a trailer. Then I'd worry. A lot.

Are hurricanes in the South like earthquakes in the West? The locals don't care until they 'sense' its a big one and just about their daily business?

Alot of people are worried around here because it's the first 'major' hurricane since Katrina in our area.

New Orleans is gonna get raped again. We should just leave the damn place and let the wildlife retake it.
Stay safe to all of you in Gustav's path.
Oh, and good luck.

It seems odd and almost defeatist to give a place with such history like New Orleans up. There must be better ways to protect it from storms. I mean Japan managed to protect itself effectively from earth quakes and they're just as devastating.

New Orleans held up fine. (Thank god it wasn't a direct hit however.) The only place that had real issues were the places where construction of flood walls wasn't complete.

There has been a few unfortunate people though on the US mainland. I think some car accidents attributed to the storm and some trees falling on people. Hope it peters out before anyone else perishes.
