Great Britain was duty bound by ... treaty to assist the Portuguese with "troops, archers, slingers, galleys sufficiently armed for war." However, no offer was made by any nation to provide military assistance for the defense of...

Guess what year the Brits failed in their obligation to defend Portugese territory?

Don't answer with political content or your guess and reasons for your guess. Feel free to include humour tho, eg. joke answers to try and throw people off. I will reveal the answer when I've seen a suffecient response.

Oh and I apologise if there was another time that the Brits failed but this one is of particularly political significance ^_^

I voted but am I supposed to say my guess as well?

Anyway I am pretty certain I got the answer. The British were certainly in an awkward position. By helping the Portugese they would have betrayed Colonel Arcturus's raptor cavalry who had served the British so loyally in the past.

A memorial to Arcturus's raiders:

Precisely ... but not quite. When the British did not support the Portugese against the renegade raptor cavalry it was not an abuse of the treaty. 1801 was a difficult year in Europe for the surviving Royal families but the less-then-legal activities of former-British-colonial forces, retired from the American Revolution was not a matter for other Empires to involve themselves in particularly given that a number of British colonies at the time were upheld by other troops that had served beside the raptor cavalry (see history of Canada) and their loyalty would've been damaged by such actions.

Simply put, the best the British could do is label 'Colonel Arcturus' a criminal and not a military entity and hope that he was not able to over-run the Portugese before Napoleon.

Thats right ... to the 2 people who voted 1961 you were correct. Britain failed in its responsibility to Portugal to support them with archers, slingers and war galleys when Portugese territory in India was attacked by the Indian military.

Nice, I figured that was it.

Archers, slingers, and war galleys might not have cut it however, just a tiny bit outdated.
