What about some kind of smoke shell or smoke artillery barrage? I that would be quite useful for concealing a frontal assault on wide open maps.

Could think of it the other way around, "look at our smoke, we are attacking here".

Good idea though.

Well if you attack they are probably going to see you anyway. A smoke screen would at least prevent them shooting you from prepared positions, or might conceal a flankin manouevre.

Or it would serve as a diversion. Smoke in one area, attack from the flank. Either way I like it.

Yeah but a smoke shell would create a much larger smokescreen.

Instead of just smoke, how about turning them into white phosphorus shells?

Yes, then they can burn enemy soldiers too! Napalm in a can. :)

Well then you wouldn't be able to use it for concealing troops. There is no point in using something that will effect your own troops, and anyways I think the idea just won't work for this game, since nobody is coordinated enough, so friendly units would probably end up at the same disadvantage as the enemy. Not to mention that it would probably lag a lot, and I doubt anyone will use it properly.

I know as a fact that in PoE:1, artillery had the option of firing smoke shells

Smoke is an excellent way of preventing your men from being sniped while moving in the open.

I considered white phosphorous but I thought that since it is an HE shell and also has an incendiary effect it would be difficult to actually attack through the smoke screen. However there would be some value to having a shell which will hurt enemy infantry while, at the same time, creating a smoke screen to conceal an attack. But the attackers would have be in an armoured vehicle or otherwise protected to get through it.
